The Center for Architectural Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
was founded in 1949 as the Institute for Urbanism and Architecture. It was
renamed as Institute for Theory and History of Urbanism and Architecture in
1977, and in 1995 – as Center for Architectural Studies
The Center for Architectural Studies is the only scholarly institution in
Bulgaria, whose scholarly activities focus on the research and study of the
history and theory of architecture and urbanism in the Bulgarian lands from
antiquity to modern times.
The staff of the Center for Architectural Studies is 20 people. There is one
full professor, eight senior researchers – associate professors in History
of Architecture; four research associates, five registered architects and
two technical officers. Twelve scholars have Doctoral degrees.
