ACTIVITIES

The activities of the Center for Architectural Studies focus on different fields of the history of architecture and urban planning in the Bulgarian lands from ancient period to modern times, such as the study of the Thracian architecture in Bulgaria, as well as the specific characteristics of Bulgarian architecture, the architectural stylistic influences, and comparative studies in the larger context of the Balkan and European architecture. Some scholars in the Center study the architecture on the border of the late Middle Ages and Modern Times, the continuity in architectural traditions through the ages; the new ideas in Europe and their impact on world architecture. Additional attention is given to the preservation of the architectural heritage and its importance for the development of cultural tourism in Bulgaria. The study of Modern architecture focuses on the history of Bulgarian urban planning and urbanism, the development of contemporary urban theory, and the Modern Bulgarian architecture. The studies of the recent Bulgarian architecture are based on the impact of the new economic and socio - cultural changes in the country on the architectural work.
