Bulgarian students participated in the first international master class of CERN in Bulgaria. The event was organized by the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy together with CERN and the Faculty of Physics of Sofia University as well as with the support of OSOS (Open Schools for Open Society) project under the European program Horizon 2020 for research and innovation.

During the training, students from 15 to 19 years of age from across the country were given the opportunity to conduct research as real scientists. By participating in the event, they had the opportunity to actively experience how and what the elementary particle physicists explore. In the first master class of CERN in Bulgaria, the students performed measurements according to the data of the CMS experiment. After introductory lectures on elementary particles theory, description of the CMS detector and explanations on the methodology of the studies, the students made the evaluation of the CMS experiment data of the large Hadron particle accelerator (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, themselves.

At the end of the day, the obtained results were discussed at a videoconference with CERN scientists and other international actors, as in real scientific collaboration.
