On October 30-31, Prof. Dr. Neli Koseva, Scientific Secretary-General of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, participated in the fourth General Assembly of the Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (ANSO) in Beijing. She presented the main scientific directions and activities of BAS, emphasizing the rich potential for cooperation with ANSO in the areas of sustainable development, artificial intelligence, capacity building, and innovation. Prof. Koseva emphasized that there were many opportunities for joint activities within the framework of common scientific projects and exchange of experts.
During the General Assembly, a new ANSO Governing Board was elected, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences assuming the presidentship of the organization.
The General Assembly approved amendments to the ANSO statutes and the candidacies of 19 new members, including Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, bringing the number of member organizations to 96 institutions.
A satellite event was the conference organized by the Alliance on the role of science and innovation for sustainable development which took place on October 28-29 also in Beijing. The importance of international scientific cooperation and building scientific capacity to overcome global challenges – from climate change and food security to rapidly developing technologies such as artificial intelligence was emphasized.
The creation of an International Research Network on AI Development and Governance was announced.
All member states are invited to appoint experts, their representatives, to the newly created network.
