The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences awarded the „Acad. Ivan Kostov“ Institute of Mineralogy and Crystallography (IMC) with a SILVER plaquette at a solemn celebration held at BAS. The award is presented on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of its foundation and for significant scientific achievements in the field of mineralogy and crystallography, the study and modelling of natural and technogenic mineral systems. The Academy’s Scientific Secretary-General, Prof. Neli Koseva, presented the award to the Director of the Institute, Prof. Boris Shivachev.<\/p>\n

On behalf of the BAS leadership, Prof. Koseva presented a congratulatory address in which the undisputable contributions of the scientists in solving scientific and applied problems related to the extraction and efficient use of mineral resources as well as the characterization of new materials and products of the pharmaceutical and food industry were noted.<\/p>\n

The director of the institute Prof. Shivachev gave a historical overview and presented the main scientific achievements over the years. A lecture on „Biomass as fuel – advantages and disadvantages“ was given by Corr. Mem. Stanislav Vassilev. The youngest assistant of the Institute, Gergana Velyanova, spoke about „Petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical characterization of coal and ashes from Maritsa East power complex“.<\/p>\n

During the celebration, mineral specimens from the Institute’s collection, synthetic single crystals and developments reflecting the scientific and expert activities of the research unit were displayed. Congratulatory addresses were presented by universities, BAS institutes and partner organizations and joint work on scientific projects was highlighted.<\/p>\n

The Institute was established in 1984 under the name of Institute of Applied Mineralogy. Since 1995<\/em>,<\/em> it has been transformed into the Central Laboratory of Mineralogy and Crystallography (CLMC) which since 2005 has been named after the eminent Bulgarian mineralogist and crystallographer Acad. Ivan Kostov. The IMC is a leading unit in the field of mineralogy and crystallography with a multidisciplinary scientific team and modern research infrastructure. The availability of specialists in mineralogy, crystallography, mineral raw materials, chemistry and physics enables competitive research in a wide range of natural sciences and the solution of diverse problems of natural, technogenic and experimentally modelled mineral systems, as well as the synthesis and crystal-chemical characterisation of new promising materials.<\/em><\/p>\n
