The Bulgarian soldier astonished the world with his feat which brought the Balkan War to an end. The triumph of victory, however, was overshadowed by the tragedy of hundreds of thousands of Thracian Bulgarians who, during the summer and fall of 1913, were subjected by the Ottoman army to persecution, ruin, and physical destruction.<\/p>\n<p>In her speech, Corr. Memb. Slavcheva recalled that in his book \u201c\u0420\u0430\u0437\u043e\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0430 \u0442\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0438\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0442\u0435 \u0431\u044a\u043b\u0433\u0430\u0440\u0438 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0437 1913 \u0433.\u201d (The Ruining of Thracian Bulgarians in 1913), Academician Lyubomir Miletich wrote that the tragedy of the Thracians was comparable to the Batak massacre. \u201cMarch 26 in the Bulgarian cultural and historical calendar is a day of remembrance and reverence for the heroic deeds of the Bulgarian soldiers who fell near Edirne.
