Prof. Dimitar Tonev, PhD, Director of the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at BAS, participated in a forum dedicated to the prospects for the development of nuclear energy in Bulgaria and the economic benefits of building new units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. The forum was organized by \u201cKozloduy NPP \u2013 New Build.\u201d<\/p>\n

The meeting was attended by representatives of \u201cKozloduy NPP \u2013 New Build,\u201d the American company Westinghouse, and the South Korean company Hyundai E&C, as well as representatives from business, industry, and academia. The event took place on May 20, 2026, at the Millennium Grand Hotel Sofia.<\/p>\n

During the forum, the CEO of \u201cKozloduy NPP \u2013 New Build,\u201d Mr. Petyo Ivanov, presented analyses indicating that the new units at the Kozloduy NPP could contribute over 55 billion euros to the Bulgarian economy through investment, employment, and industrial development.<\/p>\n

On behalf of Westinghouse, Joel Eacker, Senior Vice President for Projects in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, stated that the new units were expected to begin operation in 2037. He noted that the company had made progress with preliminary studies, was working on establishing a local supply chain, and was preparing financing documentation while also highlighting the participation of Bulgarian engineers in the project.<\/p>\n

Kyuyoun Lee, head of the global implementation team at Hyundai E&C, presented data on risk assessment, an integrated schedule, and the preparation of a financial framework, emphasizing cooperation with Bulgarian experts and regulatory authorities.<\/p>\n

During the discussion, Prof. Dimitar Tonev, PhD, emphasized the key role of INRNE \u2013 BAS in the training and education of highly qualified personnel for the nuclear energy sector. He underscored the importance of research activities, cooperation with universities and industry, as well as the need for sustainable development of expert capacity in the sector.<\/p>\n

The Institute continues to work actively to develop scientific and educational capacity in the field of nuclear technology and energy supporting the strategic development of Bulgaria\u2019s energy sector.<\/p>\n
