Academician Prof. Damyan Damyanov, M.D., was awarded the honorary gold badge of Shumen University \u201cBishop Konstantin Preslavski.\u201d The award was presented to him by Rector Prof. Natalia Vitanova during the National Conference on History, Archaeology, and Cultural Tourism \u201cJourney to Bulgaria\u201d which took place on June 10 and 11 in Shumen.<\/p>\n

A special highlight of the program was the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Acad. Damyanov – founder of the conference, a distinguished surgeon of international renown, public figure, active defender of Bulgaria\u2019s cultural and historical heritage, and Doctor Honoris Causa<\/em> of Shumen University.<\/p>\n

The tenth edition of the national conference was held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Ms. Iliana Iotova, and was organized by the Municipality of Shumen and Shumen University in partnership with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. This year, the forum\u2019s discussions focused on the theme \u201cBulgarian Statehood Through the Centuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greetings to the attendees were delivered by Acad. Damyanov, Prof. Vitanova, the Mayor of Shumen Municipality Hristo Hristov, the Scientific Secretary of the \u201cMan and Society\u201d Division of BAS, Assoc. Prof. Mariana Tian, and other official guests. On behalf of the President, Milena Dimitrova – Secretary for Culture, Education, and Relations with Bulgarian Communities Abroad – delivered a greeting.<\/p>\n

In his address, Acad. Damyanov recalled the origins of the initiative. He noted that two decades ago, after being awarded the title of honorary citizen of Shumen, he committed to organizing annual scientific events in the city. As a result, six conferences on surgery, three forums of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria, and the current conference on history, archaeology, and cultural tourism – which is becoming a tradition – have been held. He wished the participants successful work and fruitful scientific discussions.<\/p>\n

The program for the first day included plenary lectures by Georgi Parvanov – President of the Republic of Bulgaria (2002\u20132012), Acad. Vassil Nikolov, Acad. Ivan Ilchev, Prof. Vera Boneva, DSc, and Prof. Georgi Nikolov. The section sessions on the second day of the conference were held at the Regional History Museum in Shumen and at the \u201cStilian Chilingirov\u201d Regional Library.<\/p>\n
