Assoc. Prof. Eng. Petya Trifonova, PhD, is the newly elected director of the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She is a distinguished scientist with over twenty years of professional experience in the field of Earth sciences and a long-standing researcher at NIGGG-BAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. Trifonova\u2019s scientific career is closely linked to the development of modern geophysics in Bulgaria. In her work, she successfully combines fundamental scientific research with addressing practical problems related to natural hazards, geothermal resources, and sustainable environmental management. She is the author and co-author of dozens of scientific publications in prestigious international journals, and the results of her research have received wide recognition within the global scientific community.<\/p>\n

Her contribution to expanding the international scientific cooperation of NIGGG-BAS and to integrating Bulgarian geoscience into the European Research Area is particularly significant. Assoc. Prof. Trifonova is one of Bulgaria\u2019s representatives in the European scientific infrastructure EPOS ERIC (European Plate Observing System) and has played a key role in the country\u2019s accession as a full member of the organization. Thanks to her active work, Bulgarian scientists have gained broader access to European scientific networks, state-of-the-art research services, and opportunities for international partnerships.<\/p>\n

As a long-time deputy director of NIGGG-BAS, a lecturer, and a research mentor to young scientists, Assoc. Prof. Trifonova combines high scientific expertise, proven managerial skills, and a strategic vision for the institute\u2019s development. The new director takes over the management of NIGGG-BAS with the ambition to build upon the achievements of recent years and to establish the institute as a leading national and recognized European center in the field of Earth sciences.<\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. Trifonova\u2019s management program is based on the principles of continuity, transparency, and modern management. It emphasizes the development of scientific potential, the enhancement of international competitiveness, and the strengthening of the societal impact of scientific research. Key priorities include supporting young scientists, expanding participation in national and international projects, modernizing scientific infrastructure, and creating a motivating and supportive work environment.<\/p>\n

Particular attention will be paid to the development of the National Geoinformation Center as a key hub for integrating scientific and operational activities, managing scientific data, and providing modern information services. Active digitization of processes and the consistent implementation of open-access policies for scientific information are also planned.<\/p>\n

Another key focus of the program is strengthening ties with the public through active science communication and providing reliable expert information on topics of high public importance: earthquakes, climate change, air quality, natural hazards, and sustainable development.
