The third edition of the summer school on Slavic palaeography: \u201cThe Cyrillo-Methodian Legacy: The Cyrillic Alphabet in the Medieval South Slavic Lands\u201d opened on 27 July. The Cyrillo-Methodian Research Centre at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is organising the school which will run until 2 August. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the \u201cProf. Ivan Duj\u010dev\u201d Centre for Slavo-Byzantine Studies at Sofia University \u201cSt. Kliment Ohridski\u201d, and the \u201cSts. Cyril and Methodius\u201d National Library.<\/p>\n

The Director of the Cyrillo-Methodian Research Centre, Prof. Veselka Zhelyazkova, welcomed the participants and emphasised the significance of the Cyrillo-Methodian legacy as part of Europe\u2019s cultural memory as well as the role of international academic cooperation in its study, preservation and promotion.<\/p>\n

Twenty-six young researchers from Bulgaria, Italy, Serbia, France, Romania, Poland and Russia selected through a scholarship competition are taking part in this year\u2019s edition. Over the coming days, they will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in the field of Slavic Cyrillic palaeography and codicology combining theoretical training with practical sessions, working with manuscripts and applying modern digital methods to their study.<\/p>\n

The summer school aims to promote international academic cooperation and to support the training of a new generation of specialists in the field of the medieval Slavic manuscript tradition. The programme includes lectures by leading scholars, practical workshops, work with original manuscripts and presentations of modern digital tools for their description and analysis.<\/p>\n

The event is being organised as part of the \u201cDevelopment of the Cyrillic alphabet from the 9th to the 14th century in the South Slavonic lands: research and digital presentation\u201d project (Bulgarian National Science Fund, No. K<\/em>\u041f<\/em>-06-<\/em>\u041d<\/em>90\/9) and is taking place with the financial support of the \u201cPalaeobulgarica\u201d Foundation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\t
