The ninth palaeontological expedition by the National Museum of Natural History at BAS to the Tran dinosaur site has announced a new, impressive discovery \u2013 a fully preserved dinosaur bone. The expedition team comprises specialists from NMNHS\u2013BAS<\/a>, Sofia University and the Geological Institute of BAS<\/a> but it was one of the volunteers \u2013 the palaeontologist Georgi Sevov \u2013 who first came upon the valuable fossil. In the very first minutes of the working day on 31 July 2026, Georgi showed his colleagues the sedimentary fragments broken off from the rock face, and they immediately recognised them as fragments of a large fossilised bone. A few minutes later, in the sunlight, after a full 83 million years, the entire bone of an ancient reptile was extracted, with only a tiny piece missing from the end.<\/p>\n

The fossil is approximately 30 cm long and, according to palaeontologists\u2019 preliminary interpretations, is from a dinosaur\u2019s forelimb or hindlimb. It is one of the best-preserved and most complete bones discovered to date at the Tran site. Remains of titanosaurs (long-necked dinosaurs) and hadrosauroids (duck-billed dinosaurs) have been collected from the same rock layer during previous expeditions. The solid rock mass which covers more than half of the bone prevents the species of the find from being determined with greater accuracy. This will be possible once it has been processed in a laboratory.<\/p>\n

In addition to this fossil, the palaeontologists found further bone fragments from dinosaurs, several crocodile teeth and pieces of tortoise shells. The expedition to the Tran site will continue until 3 August. Georgi Sevov holds a Master\u2019s degree in palaeobiology with degrees from the University of Lille (France) and Uppsala University (Sweden). This is his second consecutive year taking part in the palaeontological expeditions organised by NMNHS-BAS.<\/p>\n
