The thematic organisation follows that chosen by Thomas Morley which is designed to guide the reader and/or student gradually into the subject of music. The treatise’s three main sections focus on the pitch and temporal properties of tones: the solmisation system and the principles of mensural notation; the knowledge and skills required to devise new melodies based on a given choral part; and, finally, the ability to compose entirely new music. Assoc. Prof. Yavor Genov’s book examines the teachings in the treatise from a comparative perspective, breaking them down into numerous sub-themes, whilst drawing parallels with significant musical authors before and around Morley’s own time. In this way, it paints a broad, complex and dynamic picture of musical thought not only in England but also in Europe as a whole during the transitional period between the end of the Renaissance and the as yet unarrived new era.

The event was organised jointly under a cooperation agreement between the Institute of Art Studies, BAS and the “Sofia Music Weeks” festival.

[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

The book „ЗНАНИЕТО ЗА МУЗИКАТА според „Ясно и леко въведение в практическата музика“ на Томас Морли (ок. 1557–1602). Между Musica Theoretica и Musica Practica“ (“KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC according to Thomas Morley’s (c. 1557–1602) “A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Music”.
