The Institute for State and Law of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is organising a scientific conference in honour of the 110th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Zhivko Stalev and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Vitali Tadzher. The forum in memory of the two prominent scholars in the field of law will be held on 19 and 20 May under the title “Current Issues in Private Law and Civil Trial”. The conference will be attended by established scholars as well as many young researchers and PhD students in the field of law from BAS and law faculties in the country. The event will be held in “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS, starting at 9:30 a.m., and admission is free for anyone who wishes to attend.

Prof. Zhivko Stalev was born on 17 May 1912 in Stanimaka (today Asenovgrad city). After 1937 he successively held the positions of assistant profssot, associate professor and professor at the Faculty of Law of Sofia University. In the period 1950-1954 he was deputy director and in the period 1972-1977 director of the Institute for State and Law at BAS. He is the author of numerous studies in the field of law, including “Bulgarian Civil Procedural Law” (1966), “The Nature and Function of Private International Law” (1982), “Commercial Register” (1994), “Arbitration in Private Law Disputes” (1997), “The Normative Force of the Factual” (1997), “The Notarial Deed” (2004) and many others. President of the Constitutional Court in the period 1997-2000. Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law, Honorary Member of the International Association of Procedural Law, Doctor Honoris Causa of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Long-standing arbitrator and Chairman of the Arbitration Court at the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 20 years.

Prof. Vitali Tadzher was born on 3 May in Sofia in 1922. He was a long-time lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Sofia University. Author of numerous scientific publications that have served to educate dozens of generations of jurists to the present day, including “Law of Co-operative Agriculture” (1955), “Possession” (1971), “Structure of Contractual Relations” (1971), “Civil Law of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. General part. Parts 1-2” (1972), “The Law of State Socialist Property in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria” (1975), “Privatization. Conversion of State and Municipal Property into Private Property” (1992), “Capital Trading Companies” (1994), “Insolvency under Commercial Law” (1996) and many others. Dean of the Faculty of Law of Sofia University in the period 1962-1964. Editor of the journal “Socialist Law”, founder and editor-in-chief of the journal “Contemporary Law” from 1990 until his death. Long-time arbitrator and since 1985 Deputy Chairman of the Arbitration Court at the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
