A hundred and fifty trees will be planted by scientists and employees of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on the occasion of Earth Day 22 April. It is an initiative of the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) and the Forest Institute (FI) and is dedicated to the 150th jubilee of BAS.

The green areas will be planted in front of NIGGG building in the scientific complex of BAS at 4th km. Saplings of more than 25 deciduous and coniferous species, mostly of local origin, as well as beautiful flowering trees are selected. The tree species are selected according to the conditions of the terrain, and their contact with the existing vegetation is also respected.

The adjacent green areas around NIGGG are pre-zoned, with the trees planted to meet the specific needs and requirements of improving the functions of green systems: noise mitigation, landscaping and complementing the park environment.

April 22 is celebrated as Earth Day by more than half a billion people around the world. Each year, the International Earth Day Network coordinates the actions of more than 12,000 partners in 174 countries to protect the planet Earth and preserve life on it. The network seeks to create broad civil support for sustainable and effective environmental development policies around the world.

The official start of the afforestation will be given at 13:00 on April 22, 2019 in front of the building of the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography in the scientific complex of BAS at 4th km.
