The thirty-first edition of the European Competition for Young Scientists (EUCYS) will be held in Sofia from 13 to 18 September 2019. A hundred and fifty-five students from 40 countries from all over the world (including Canada, China, Russia, USA and South Korea) will arrive in Sofia to participate in the largest and most prestigious competition for young scientists under the auspices of the European Union.

The organizers of this year’s competition are the Ministry of Education and Science and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Partner of the event is Sofia Municipality.

The competition was created in 1989 on the initiative of the European Commission and annually distinguishes the best student scientific achievements. EUCYS aims to enhance collaboration and exchanges between young researchers, to enable them to discuss their work with leading world scientists, and to foster the pursuit of career in science.

Bulgaria has been participating in EUCYS since 1998 and is hosting it for the first time in the history of the competition. Since 2014, the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has been participating in the organization of the Young Talents competition of the Ministry of Education and Science, through which the Bulgarian participants in EUCYS are selected.

In 2019, it is the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Over the years, the Academy has actively supported the process of seeking and building talent in all areas of science.
