BAS, BEH, and Maritsa East Mines sign a tripartite agreement for cooperation in the exploration of critical raw materials and rare earth metals

  At an official ceremony attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rosen Zhelyazkov, and the Minister of Energy, Zhecho Stankov, on January 15 in Radnevo, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Geological Institute of BAS (GI-BAS), the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH), and Maritsa East Mines EAD, represented by Prof. Svetoslav Georgiev, Mr. Valentin Nikolov, and Mr. Todor Todorov, respectively. A doctoral student from the Institute of Microbiology of BAS wins the annual doctoral scholarship of the Karoll Knowledge Foundation

Lidiya Kechidzhieva, a doctoral student in immunology at the Institute of Microbiology of BAS, is the new recipient of the annual doctoral scholarship of the Karoll Knowledge Foundation. She won the jury's vote in competition with two doctoral students from Sofia University and one from South-West University. The topic of her doctoral thesis is “Investigation of the effect of a specific methyl-supplemented diet on the development of systemic lupus erythematosus in mouse models of the disease.” Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the most complex autoimmune diseases, characterized by impaired immune tolerance, chronic inflammation, and severe organ damage. Lecture on “Laser-induced nuclear fusion – a new physical paradigm”

On January 13, Assoc. Prof. Ekaterina Yordanova, Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics at BAS, delivered the first public lecture for 2026 in “The World of Physics – Live” lecture series at the American Center in the Sofia City Library. The popular science lecture on “Laser-induced nuclear fusion – a new physical paradigm” which marks the beginning of the second decade of the lecture series, attracted the attention of the physics community in Bulgaria, representatives of various physics fields, and the general public. Applications are now open for “Best Youth Startup in Bulgaria 2026”

The fifth edition of the national youth competition will offer support for a larger number of projects, a rich training and mentoring program as well as numerous in-person and online events. From January 12 to April 24, 2026 young people from all over the country aged between 18 and 29 (including students and pupils in grades 11 and 12) with bold and innovative business ideas can take part in the fifth edition of the “Best Youth Startup in Bulgaria” national competition. Fake medicinal products

The chairman of the Forum for Combating Pseudoscience at BAS, Acad. Ivan Juhnovski, filed a report with the Bulgarian Drug Agency regarding the widespread sale in Bulgarian pharmacies of over 40 fake medicinal products manufactured by the Boiron homeopathic company. The report is supported by Academician Dr. Bogdan Petrunov, Corresponding Member Dr. Tsvetalina Tankova, Academician Christo Tsvetanov, Academician Ivan Zagorchev, Academician Ivan Ivanov, and Prof. Ivan Ivanov. Chemical tests on homeopathic sugar granules from the pharmacy network have established that the quantities of accompanying technological admixtures (inorganic salts and elements) contained in them are billions of times greater than the quantities of the same salts and elements indicated by the degree of dilution on the labels of homeopathic preparations with the same chemical formula. The project “What is written remains. Write correctly!” holds two language quizzes at Sofia University

  On January 9, participants in the project “What is written remains. Write correctly!” held two language quizzes at the invitation of the Faculty of Slavic Philology and the Faculty of History of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Students majoring in Bulgarian Philology, History, and History and Geography answered questions in the fields of etymology, semantics, and transformations. Three teams of ten people each competed in each quiz. With the historians, the “Vazrozhdentsi” (Revivalists) team won while the “Sinigeri” (Tits) team won with the philologists. The audience also had the opportunity to answer entertaining questions in the fields of Bulgarian dialectology, Old Bulgarian language, etymology, and computational linguistics.
