International Forum “Brand Bulgaria – Touch the Wonders”

The 2023 Award for Discovery was given to Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski from NAIM-BAS The third international forum "Brand Bulgaria - Touch the Wonders" was held at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The event was organized by the Cultural Heritage Society (Europa Nostra Bulgaria) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture and under the patronage of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel. With a minute of silence the participants in the forum paid tribute to the victims of the flood in Tsarevo. 100th anniversary of the birth of the eminent Italian Slavist and Bulgarianist Prof. Riccardo Picchio

Commemorative evening dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the eminent Italian specialist in Slavonic and Bulgarian studies Prof. Riccardo Picchio was held on 31 August in the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The initiative is part of the events under the patronage of the Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria, organized within the national scientific programme "Development and Promotion of Bulgarian Language Studies Abroad". Honorary medal “Marin Drinov” on ribbon for Corr. Memb. Svetozar Margenov

The Governing Council of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences awarded with an honorary medal "Marin Drinov" on a ribbon Corr. Memb. Svetozar Margenov, Director of the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of BAS (IICT). The award was presented by the President of the Academy Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of BAS, at an official celebration. The honour is awarded for the contribution of Corr. Memb. Margenov to the development of Bulgarian science, as well as on the occasion of his 70th anniversary. Corr. Memb. Svetozar Margenov is a scientist with international reputation and recognition in the field of numerical methods, mathematical and computer modeling and parallel algorithms. First Arctic expedition of the National Museum of Natural History-BAS

An international scientific expedition to the fjords of Southwest Greenland is taking place in the period 14-31 August 2023. The expedition team includes Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tihomir Stefanov from NMNHS-BAS together with scientists from Denmark, Norway and the UK. The task of the expedition is to study the impact of active glacier melt on fish populations in the region. For this purpose, two fjords will be studied - with and without glacial water inflow. In them, mainly different migration strategies of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) will be investigated using acoustic telemetry. The result expected by the team is a confirmation of the hypothesis that Arctic chars in Greenland fjords with inflow from glacial runoff will have different migratory behavior and feeding habits than chars inhabiting [...]

“Academician Rostislaw Kaischew” Award for Young Scientist

The ICCGE20 International Scientific Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy with over 600 participants took place in Naples from 30 July to 4 August. The conference covered all aspects of crystal growth, epitaxy, new materials with applications in photonics, optoelectronics, energy storage, biomedicine, cleantech, etc. On the occasion of the 115th anniversary of the birth of Academician Rostislaw Kaischew, the Scientific Council of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of BAS, together with the ICCGE20 organizing committee, established an award for the best oral presentation by a young scientist at the conference. 110 years since the birth of the biologist Acad. Radoy Popivanov (1913-2010)

110 years since the birth of the scientist-biologist and geneticist Acad. Radoy Popivanov (1913-2010) are celebrated on 9 August 2023. Radoy Popivanov was born in 1913 in Pleven. In 1939 he graduated in medicine in Sofia. As an assistant professor at the Medical Faculty of Sofia University he worked on problems of seroanthropology, medical biology and genetics under Metodiy Popov, and specialized in internal medicine under Konstantin Chilov. He was director of the Institute of Medical Biology of the Medical Academy and of the Central Laboratory of Genetics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1974) and Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare (1977-88).
