Meeting with the Bulgarian community, students and teachers from the “Hristo Botev” School in Strasbourg

Hristov and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lidiya Mihova, Head of School. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elka Traykova - Scientific Secretary of the "Cultural and Historical Heritage and National Identity" division introduced the attendees to the history and the place of BAS in the contemporary scientific and spiritual space. She presented the book "To the Bulgarian Roots" which collected essays, stories, poems, drawings and sculptures of the Bulgarian school students, published within the framework of the "Development and Promotion of Bulgarian Studies Abroad" National Science Programme. Exhibition on the occasion of the 155th anniversary of BAS at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg

  On 5 November the exhibition marking 155 years since the establishment of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was opened at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. The event was organized jointly by the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Council of Europe, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the European Association “Cyril and Methodius”. Ambassador Maria Spassova, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Council of Europe, presented the exhibition as a journey through time, tracing the contribution of BAS in various fields of modern science. She focused on the sustainability of the Academy, established before the Liberation of Bulgaria, its evolution through historical challenges and its unwavering commitment to knowledge, scientific development and the safeguarding of national identity. National workshop under the CASRI project

A national workshop on the CASRI project (Collaborative Action coordinating and enhancing systemic, actionable and transversal Sustainability Research and Innovation) was held at the Botanical Garden of the BAS. The project is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme, launched in January 2024. BAS is a full member in a consortium of 13 European countries, including the European Environment Agency. Assoc. Prof. Ina Aneva (project leader for the country) and Corr. Mem. Prof. Dimitar Ivanov presented the results of the project to stakeholders. The aim of CASRI is to improve cooperation between European environmental agencies and to promote innovative research and solutions in the field of sustainability. “Western Bulgarian Outlands – History and Prospects” scientific conference

  On November 8, 2024, the date on which the Western Bulgarian Outlands Day is celebrated, the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences organized the scientific conference "Western Bulgarian Outlands - History and Prospects". The forum was held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Organization of Refugees from the Western Outlands, an event that united the Bulgarians who had left their homelands after the implementation of the provisions of the Treaty of Neuilly. The conference held its four sessions in the building of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Institute of Solid-State Physics “Acad. Georgi Nadjakov”  signed a memorandum with a Japanese research institute

 On November 7, 2024, the Institute of Solid-State Physics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences marked an important step in expanding its network of international partnerships with a focus on innovation by signing a cooperation agreement with a leading Japanese institute – the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR), Kyoto. The memorandum was signed in Sofia by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekaterina Yordanova, Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics at BAS, and Dr. Hiroyuki Suzuki, Senior Executive Vice President and Representative Director of the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR). The largest nursing colony of the Lesser Horseshoe Bat and the Geoffroy’s Bat in the world is in the Eastern Rhodopes

A new publication in the European Journal of Wildlife Research reports the discovery of the largest nursing colony of the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) and the Geoffroy’s bat (Myotis emarginatus) worldwide. It is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, near the town of Madzharovo. The study is a collaborative work of a team of Bulgarian and Czech researchers, with lead author Dr Heliana Dundarova  of the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.     Dr Heliana Dundarova during field studies Fig. 2.
