Awards for Women in Science

The awards in the twelfth edition of the national fellowship programme "For Women in Science" were presented at a ceremony at Sofia University "St. Kl. Ohridski”. Three inspiring Bulgarian women scientists were honoured for their research ideas as fellows of the programme for 2022. They are Dr. Nina Kaneva-Dobrevska, lecturer in inorganic chemistry at SU “Kliment Ohridski" (for the project " Water treatment for pharmaceutical pollution"), Dr. Katerina Takova-Sakaliyska, lecturer in biology at "Paisii Hilendarski" University of Plovdiv (for the project "Immunodiagnosis of SARS-COV-2 infection by antigen produced in tobacco products") and Dr. Maya Zhekova, lecturer in quantum physics at SU “Kliment Ohridski" (for the project "Quasi-nondiffracting Bessel-Gaussian beams with residual topological charge"). Opening of Laboratory “Virtual History of Bulgarian Literature (IX-XXI centuries)”

The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, inaugurated the laboratory "Virtual History of Bulgarian Literature (IX-XXI centuries)" at the Institute for Literature. The laboratory is part of the project "Establishment and Development of the Centre of Excellence "Heritage BG", funded by the Operational Programme "Science and Education for Smart Growth 2014-2020". The Institute for Literature is a partner in the project which is implemented by a consortium of twelve leading educational and scientific organisations. Their activities are oriented towards the management and safeguarding of Bulgarian cultural heritage, the management of protected areas and environmental protection, regional development, education, various economic sectors of the creative and recreational industries, the development of libraries, museums and archives, arts, etc.

BAS signed a cooperation agreement with the Medical University – Varna

The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, and the Rector of Medical University "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" - Varna Prof. Dr. Valentin Ignatov signed a framework agreement for cooperation between the two institutions in the field of research, education and innovation. The document provides for the implementation of joint activities between the university and the institutes of the Academy in the field of biomedicine, such as the development of research projects, scientific, applied, expert and information activities, as well as initiatives for the training of students of different educational and qualification levels - graduate students, postgraduates, doctoral students. The tower for the new telescope at NAO Rozhen is ready

The construction of the tower for the new 1.5-meter telescope at the National Astronomical Observatory in Rozhen at the Institute of Astronomy of BAS has been completed. The 6-meter dome has been installed and the finishing works on the internal insulation of the tower are currently being carried out, as well as the installation of the power supply and the fiber-optic internet cable. Due to the onset of winter in the Rhodope Mountains and the snow cover that has formed in the area, the installation of the telescope itself will be postponed until spring 2023. A robot for disinfection of premises was invented by scientists from the Institute of Robotics of BAS

Scientists from the Institute of Robotics of BAS have created a robot for disinfection of premises which can be used to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The innovation is applicable to automated biological decontamination of homes and health facilities, kindergartens and schools as well as all floor surfaces contaminated with multi-resistant bacteria and superbacteria, fungi, spores and viruses.
