“Angel Kanchev” University of Ruse celebrates its 80th anniversary

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of “Angel Kanchev” University of Ruse, a series of events were held between November 10 and 12, 2025. The motto of the celebrations in Ruse was “80 years facing knowledge, youth, and the future.” Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov, Vice-President of BAS, took part in the solemn assembly-concert. He presented the Rector of the university, Assoc. Prof. Desislava Atanasova, with a congratulatory address on behalf of Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva, President of BAS. BAS awards Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, with a Medal of Distinction

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences awarded Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, with the “Medal of Distinction of the President of BAS” at a ceremony held at the Academy on November 12. The President of the Academy, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, presented the award “for his contribution and efforts to establish peace and justice and to build a culture of peace.” In the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa delivered a Lectio Magistralis on “Peace on earth, which all men of every era have most eagerly yearned for.” The President of BAS, Corr. The Order of Academic Palms of the Republic of France

The French Minister of Education has conferred the Order of Academic Palms of the Republic of France (L'ordre des Palmes académiques, grade de chevalier) for 2025 upon Prof. Roumiana Preshlenova from the Institute of Balkan Studies with Centre of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. This is one of the highest distinctions, testifying to France's recognition of her contribution to the French-Bulgarian cooperation in the field of university education and scientific research. The President of the European Research Council visits BAS

The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, met today at the Academy with Prof. Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council. The meeting was attended by Corr. Memb. Evdokia Pasheva, Vice-President of BAS, Prof. Zara Cherkezova-Zheleva, National Contact Point for ERC in Bulgaria, and Ms. Sabine Simmross. The President of BAS acquainted Prof. Leptin with the activities of the Centers of Competence and Excellence and emphasized that the modern infrastructure at the Academy supported the research of scientists. Prof. Leptin shared good practices from other Eastern European countries that could lead to increased participation of BAS units in ERC competitions. BAS participates in international meeting-discussion “Fortifying Freedom – Defense and Democracy Dialogue”

  An international meeting-discussion entitled “Fortifying Freedom – Defense and Democracy Dialogue” was held on November 11. The forum was attended by the director of the Geological Institute of BAS, Assoc. Prof. Svetoslav Georgiev, who delivered a report on “Critical Raw Materials: The new frontier of geo-economic competition.” The forum was organized by the Center for the Study of Democracy. Topics focused mainly on the new geopolitical and geo-economic realities facing the European Union. The keynote address at the event was delivered by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. Information and awareness-raising forum “Critical and strategic raw materials: expert opinions and prevailing attitudes in public opinion”

On November 11, 2025, BAS hosted an informational and promotional forum entitled “Critical and Strategic Raw Materials: Expert Opinions and Dominant Attitudes in Public Opinion.” The forum was opened by Assoc. Prof. Svetoslav Georgiev, Director of the Geological Institute at BAS and National Coordinator of the “Critical and Strategic Raw Materials for Green Transition and Sustainable Development” National Science Program.
