European Commission approves the establishment of LOFAR ERIC with the participation of Bulgaria

The European Commission approved the establishment of LOFAR ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium), in which Bulgaria is a full founding member. The main task of LOFAR ERIC is to provide the European astronomical community with a coordinated exploitation of LOFAR (Low Frequency Array), the world's largest radio telescope at low frequencies below 250 MHz. The LOFAR ERIC aims to position LOFAR as a world-leading research infrastructure that will, in the long term, maintain global leadership positions in radio astronomy. LOFAR is an extremely versatile modern radio telescope that can be used to observe the most ancient stars and galaxies as well as our Sun and the dynamics of the Earth's ionosphere. In essence, it is a pan-European infrastructure for low-frequency radio astronomy observations with antenna [...]

ScienceDirect publication featuring scientists from the Institute of Astronomy

collage drawing showing high-energy ions from the Sun interacting with the Earth's magnetosphere and attacking the electronics of satellites in orbit around the Earth "A review of Solar Energetic Particles prediction models" - under this title, a publication appeared on ScienceDirect, Elsevier's leading platform for peer-reviewed scientific literature. The international team of authors in the study includes scientists from the Institute of Astronomy with NAO - BAS: Assoc. Prof. Kamen Kozarev, Assoc. Prof. Rositsa Miteva, Sen. Asst. Prof. Momchil Dechev and the PhD student from Egypt Mohamed Nedal. Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) are streams of protons, electrons, and ions accelerated to high energies in the huge eruptions on the Sun's surface and which spread throughout the solar system, "surfing" on the interplanetary [...]

“Green house” and a trolleybus and a hydrogen-powered ship were developed by scientists under the EPLUS NSP

Seven demonstration models for the storage and use of clean energy for transport and households have been developed by scientists under the National Scientific Programme "Low Carbon Energy for Transport and Domestic Use" (EPLUS). The achievements were presented at a final information meeting of the programme which took place today at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The head of the programme, Academician Konstantin Hadjiivanov, presented the activities of the scientific team, which includes 206 scientists and specialists from 16 partner organizations from all over the country. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is the lead scientific organization for EPLUS, and the funding for the programme is provided by the Ministry of Education and Science. We have achieved the main goal of the scientific programme [...]

The first hydrogen charging station in Bulgaria is now part of the infrastructure of the “HITMOBIL” Centre of Competence with the lead organization IEES-BAS

Hydrogen charging station HITMOBIL CoC The construction of Field Laboratory 6 "Integrated Energy Systems" is in its final phase. The laboratory will carry out pre-industrial scale research on the production of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), its storage in various battery and hydrogen systems, its supply to battery and hydrogen electric vehicle charging stations and to the electricity grid, as part of the activities of the "Experimental Development" Module of the Hitmobil CoC with IEES-BAS as the lead organisation. The laboratory has the capability to test varying combinations of RES generation modes. For this purpose, a photovoltaic park with fixed panels and sun tracking structures has been built and a wind generator emulator has been installed to allow the research to proceed [...]
