The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences distinguished Acad. Svetlanka Kuyumdzhieva and Acad. Vassya Bankova with the "Marin Drinov" honorary medal. An international group of scientists from the Hereon Research Centre, part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres and the Institute of Oceanology at BAS, are working to clarify the situation with the pollution of the Black Sea following the accident with Russian tankers carrying fuel oil.  The accident was caused by a powerful sea storm resulting in one of the tankers splitting and spilling fuel oil. Prof. Dr. August Ivanov, Director of the Institute of Robotics of BAS, is listed in the Golden Book of Bulgarian Discoverers and Inventors. He is the only scientist to be awarded the highest distinction by the Patent Office for 2024. The President of the Patent Office Olya Dimitrova announced the name of Prof. Ivanov at an official ceremony held today at the Central Patent Library. Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Dr. David Sukalinski presented the award to Prof. Ivanov who worked in the field of robotics, sensorics, artificial intelligence, nano and micro technologies. At the meeting, the challenges facing the system of higher education and science in Bulgaria and the interaction between the two institutions were discussed as well as the possibility of a broader partnership between the academic community of BAS and the Council of Rectors through the implementation of joint projects, research, modernization of the educational process as well as the implementation of joint patents. The exhibition "Chronicles of Steel. Cold Weapons of the Bulgarian Middle Ages" was opened on December 11 at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum of BAS. The exposition presents the culture of war in the Bulgarian lands in the Middle Ages through the most iconic weapons of the era - swords, sabres and combat knives. The Director of the National Archaeological Institute, Assoc.
