“Outstanding Young Scientist in Inorganic Chemistry” Award

Dr. Ivalina Trendafilova from the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Center of Phytochemistry - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was awarded the "Prof. Christo Balarew" award of the Union of Chemists in Bulgaria "Outstanding Young Scientist in Inorganic Chemistry". The ceremony was held on the Day of the National Enlighteners. The prize was awarded for Dr. Trendafilova's developments in the field of preparation of innovative porous nanosized silicates and their potential application as carriers in drug-delivery systems to improve the efficiency of application of biologically active substances of natural origin, and also for the preparation of effective catalysts for the treatment of wastewater and harmful emissions from production processes.

New plant species discovered and described for science

Sideritis elica Aneva, Zhelev & Bonchev is the new species discovered and described by Assoc. Prof. Ina Aneva (Scientific Secretary of division “Biodiversity, Bioresources and Ecology” and Researcher at the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research, BAS), Prof. Petar Zhelev (University of Forestry) and Sen. Asst. Prof. Georgi Bonchev, PhD (Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics, BAS). Sideritis elica (Rhodope elica) differs morphologically from the well-known Mursal tea (Sideritis scardica), and the differences have been confirmed at the molecular level by the application of genetic analyses. The President of BAS participated in the conference of Scientific Francophonie in Cairo

At the invitation of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), from 26 to 28 October 2022 the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, participated in the Second Annual Conference of the Scientific Francophonie in Cairo, Egypt. The main theme of this year's forum was artificial intelligence. AUF is an international organisation with over 1000 participants (universities, institutes, research centers, etc.) spread over 119 countries. It aims to unite and support francophone scientific communities around the world. In 2022, BAS applied for associate membership in the AUF, and the Academy's application was approved at the regional level (Eastern Europe). 130 years National Archaeological Museum

The exhibition "130 Years of the National Archaeological Museum" was presented on 25 October by the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at BAS (NAIM-BAS). It is dedicated to the founding of the People’s Museum, now the National Archaeological Museum, separated as an independent institution from the Bulgarian People’s Library in 1892. This is the oldest and with the richest collection museum in the country. More than 150 of the most interesting exhibits, which entered the Museum's collection when it was a department of the People’s Library until the first decades of the 20th century, are presented. Meeting of Prof. Julian Revalski with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Bulgaria

The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea H.E. Mr. Lee Ho-shik. They discussed the opportunities for strengthening the cooperation between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and scientific organizations in the Republic of Korea, as well as the existing cooperation between BAS and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. It is planned to organize a joint scientific seminar in Bulgaria. The meeting was also attended by the Vice-President of BAS Corr. Member Stefan Hadjitodorov.

Public discussion of the Environmental Assessment Report of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan

A public discussion of the Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) of NRRP was held on 21 October 2022 in “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Council of Ministers - Mr. Ivan Ivanov (Director of the "Central Coordination Unit" in the Council of Ministers) and Ms. Tsvetelina Hinkova (expert "Central Coordination Unit"). Mr. Ivanov expressed special thanks to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for lending a hand and for the considerable efforts made in the preparation of the EAR. Assoc.
