An initiative under the “Peaceful atom-green planet” motto was held today at Science Complex 2 of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The event marked the 39th anniversary of the Chernobyl NPP. The President of the National Assembly Nataliya Kiselova and the President of BAS Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva took part in the initiative organized by the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) in cooperation with the Institute of Solid State Physics, the Institute of Electronics, the Central Laboratory of Solar Energy and New Energy Sources and the State Enterprise “Radioactive Waste”. They participated in the planting of coniferous trees in the yard of the scientific complex as a symbol of safe nuclear energy.

“There is nothing better than safe nuclear power. We must remember what happened in 1986 and not let it happen again”, the Director of INRNE Prof. Dimitar Tonev said. The Parliament Speaker pointed out that science could prevent nuclear accidents and therefore a renaissance of Bulgarian nuclear science was needed.

The Director of INRNE presented Mrs Nataliya Kiselova and Corr. Memb. Slavcheva certificates for participation in the planting of trees symbolizing ecology and responsible use of nuclear energy.

The event continued with a sports festival and a parade of vintage cars.
