Awards of the Todorov Foundation were presented for the first time at a ceremony held on 20 May at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The Foundation is named after the famous Bulgarian physicist Acad. Ivan T. Todorov (1933 – 2025) and aims to encourage the development of mathematical physics and mathematics in Bulgaria, as well as the creation of remarkable works of fiction in Bulgarian.

The first winners of the prize were named during his lifetime by the patron of the Foundation, and for 2025 they are: Corr. Memb. Valentina Petkova of the Institute of Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy of BAS and Corr. Memb. Stoycho Yazadzhiev from the Faculty of Physics of SU “Kliment Ohridski” and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS. The “Prof. Todor Borov” award for 2025 is given to the poet Ivan Teofilov, the poet Ani Ilkov and the writer Milen Ruskov.

Under the Foundation’s rules, the honorees have formed a jury that will have the lead role in determining the next winners of the awards – which are scheduled to be presented on the eve of May 24.

The Foundation’s work will be overseen and supported by a board of trustees of internationally renowned scientists and public figures. Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of BAS (President of the Academy 2016-2024) participates in this board of trustees. “The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is the most appropriate venue for the presentation of the awards named after Acad. Todorov. Not only Acad. Todorov’s life is connected with BAS; his grandfather Ivan Peev-Plachkov is among the donors of the Academy,” Prof. Revalski said.

Each of the winners received a special badge of honour, a certificate and a cash prize. The Foundation’s badge of honour makes reference to the ideals of antiquity, weaving together the tetrahedron, the cube and the octahedron (three of the 5 Platonic solids), and at the same time relates (through Fano cube) to one of the last topics of scientific interest for Prof. Todorov: the relationship between octonions and elementary particle physics.
