Prof. Dr. Valya Vassileva, Director of the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics at BAS, is among the eight scientists and innovators from around the world selected to participate in the prestigious international Malmö Residency 2025 programme. Besides personal success, this is also a recognition of the high scientific level and international commitment of the Bulgarian academic community.
Malmö Residency is an initiative of more than 70 institutions, universities, companies and public organisations in the Swedish city of Malmö. The programme is funded by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket), Malmö City and the Swedish Institute. It offers a one-month stay, full logistical support and collaboration opportunities for international experts working on current topics such as green transition, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, food innovation, smart and digital cities as well as cultural and creative industries.
In 2025, more than 860 candidates from 88 countries applied to participate, with Prof. Vassileva the only selected representative from Bulgaria and South East Europe.
During her stay in Malmö, Prof. Vassileva will work at the intersection between plant biology, sustainable agriculture and artificial intelligence. She says:
“During my stay in Malmö I would like to establish contacts with entrepreneurs, researchers and industrial partners to co-develop new ideas for sustainable crops and AI-based biological solutions. We will also look to exchange experiences in areas combining biotechnology and digital transformation. We are currently starting activities on an approved Horizon Europe project on under-researched legumes, and my participation in the Malmö Residency creates a favourable environment to build strategic partnerships and develop collaborative scientific and applied initiatives.”
The participation of Prof. Valya Vassileva in Malmö Residency 2025 confirms the role of BAS as a leading scientific institution engaged in global challenges in the field of sustainable development, innovation and international cooperation.
