On 30.05.2025 in Sofia the “CLEAN METALS – FOR A STRONG AND INDEPENDENT EUROPE” conference organized by the BULGARIAN ASSOCIATION OF THE METALLURGICAL INDUSTRY was held. Prof. Margarita Popova, Scientific Secretary of BAS, introduced the participants in the conference with the research and projects that the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was working on for the implementation of decarbonization and green transition. Assoc. Prof. Svetoslav Georgiev, Director of the Geological Institute, presented the “Critical and Strategic Raw Materials for Green Transition and Sustainable Development” National Scientific Programme funded by the Ministry of Education and Science and coordinated by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The conference was attended by Axel Eggert, Director General of EUROFER, Roman Stiftner, Member of the Board of EUROMETAUX, Managing Director of the Mining and Steel Association, Austria, as well as directors of the leading companies in the field of metallurgy, such as Steel Industry AD, Aurubis Bulgaria, KCM AD, Promet Steel EAD, representatives of the mining and cement industry, MEPs. The increasing energy prices, the strong international competition and the ambitious environmental targets of the European Union which put the sector under considerable pressure were discussed.
