Successfully implemented projects between science and business and ready-to-implement scientific and applied technologies were presented by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences at the “Science for Business” Forum held today at Inter Expo Center. The event has been organized for the fifth consecutive year together with the Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency (BSMEPA).

Deputy Minister of Innovation and Growth Krasimir Yakimov attended the opening of the forum. In his address, he announced that the state was indebted to the business and research community. Two European programmes with a total budget of about five billion leva are available to promote the relationship between business and science, Deputy Minister Yakimov said.

The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, thanked for the successful cooperation between the Academy and BSMEPA. “Over the years this forum has become very important for us with the opportunities for discussions and meetings with the business.  So far useful links and collaborations have been established but this is not enough because we can make them much more productive. On the one hand, Bulgarian scientists should not be satisfied with just achieving a result from a project or technology, and on the other hand, Bulgarian business should be prepared to make risky investments. Because investments in science are risky,” the President of BAS said.

Three implemented projects between science and business were presented to the participants and guests of the forum. Prof. Penka Petrova from the Institute of Microbiology told about the successful path of a bacterial preparation with pesticidal action with wide application in agriculture which was ready for sale on five continents. The development is a patent of scientists from two institutes of the Academy and is supported by the “Agria” company. A research team from the Institute of Polymers has carried out a joint business collaboration with Kozloduy NPP, and scientists from the Institute for Population and Human Studies have developed a psychological assistant based on artificial intelligence to support the mental health of expectant and current mothers.

Teams of institutes from different scientific divisions of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences showed 14 scientific and applied technologies that were ready for implementation in the Bulgarian economy. At stands in the expo area, the guests of the exhibition got acquainted with innovative developments and current projects of scientists from BAS.
