The Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (INRNE-BAS) hosted a key final training on the search and security of radioactive sources, carried out in close cooperation with the US Department of Energy. The event, which took place on 6 June, was part of a global effort to enhance the safety, control and safe disposal of radioactive materials worldwide.

The training brought together leading experts from INRNE-BAS, their counterparts from Slovakia, as well as experts from various institutions involved in safety when handling radioactive materials. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Search and Security Program provided not only advanced radiation detection equipment but also valuable training held June 2-6, 2025 in Sofia. It covered all stages of the process: from operating radiation detection equipment to planning and preparing a search mission.

As a token of its long-standing partnership and commitment to radiation safety, the U.S. Department of Energy made a significant donation of advanced instrumentation for the identification of radioactive materials and wastes to INRNE-BAS.

Prof. Dimitar Tonev, Director of INRNE, expressed his sincere gratitude for the trust and assistance provided by the US experts. He stressed the outstanding success of the conducted training which contributed significantly to the improvement of radiation safety in Bulgaria.
