The President of BAS Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva has taken part in the expert panel “Transforming Higher Education through Innovation and Research” at the Green Transition Forum 5.0, which is taking place in Sofia from 16 to 20 June.

“No matter how inspiring innovations are, they need fundamental scientific knowledge and research to happen,” Corr. Memb. Slavcheva said. She recalled that “scientists from BAS and universities work together in centres of excellence and competence. These centres are the place where the link between science and business can happen because modern laboratories provide opportunities for obtaining a commercial product,” the President of the Academy further mentioned. According to her, “the drive for innovation should not be age-restricted and therefore these centres can become a place for retraining where people can gain knowledge also for another profession.”

During the Green Transition 5.0 Forum, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has presented developments and scientific results of the BAS units, thematically related to the main topics of the event, such as: approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, innovations for alternative energy, new technologies for application in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, etc. Representatives of the Academy’s institutes have promoted the results of their work to the forum participants. Valuable publications of the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Academic Publishing House have been presented as well as scientific results of research conducted with the AVITOHOL and HEMUS supercomputers. The participation of BAS has aroused serious interest and has been a worthy side-event of the fifth edition of the international meeting on the green transition which has turned Sofia into the European capital of the green transition (in the words of Teresa Ribera, Vice-President of the European Commission).
