The international conference “Skills for Labour Markets in the Green and Digital Transition”, part of the European research project SkiLMeeT (https://skilmeet.eu/) which brings together 70 participants from 23 countries is taking place in the central building of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – BAS. The event is focusing on key questions for the future: how green and digital transformation are changing jobs, education and the skills needed. Over 30 presentations will be made over the two days, with academics and experts discussing solutions to the skills shortage and ways to better support workers and employers.
The programme includes highly-regarded speakers at European level. Simone Rosini from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion presented the EU perspective on up-skilling, re-skilling and lifelong learning across the Union. Mariya Mincheva from the Bulgarian Industrial Association highlighted why skills were the main currency of competitiveness, while Matias Cortes from York University in Toronto looked at the role of firm specialisation in shaping wages, inequality and workers’ long-term outcomes.
“Skills and labour shortages are among the most pressing challenges facing European economies today,” Prof. DSc Vassil Kirov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at BAS said. The Institute is a co-organizer of the conference.
