The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, participated in the 18th edition of the “Academy of Science Presidents’ Meeting” which is organized annually by the “Science Council of Japan” within the framework of the “Science and Technology in Society” forum (STS forum).

“Innovation-promoting approaches to science funding” was the topic of discussion for this year’s Meeting. Each participant was given the opportunity to share their institution’s experience with securing funding for promising research in priority areas, and the positives and negatives of existing mechanisms for approving research projects for funding were discussed. Corr. Memb. Slavcheva presented the successful experience of BAS institutes in combining different national and international programs for funding research and innovation.

The 22nd edition of the “Science and Technology in Society” Forum was inaugurated on 5 October in Kyoto, in the presence of Emperor Naruhito, 126th Emperor of Japan. Ms Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation, spoke at the opening session of the Forum.

The event runs until 7 October and provides a platform for discussions on the most topical issues related to science and technology. Each year, it attracts hundreds of participants from the fields of science, politics and business.

On 4 October, just before the opening of the Forum, the President of BAS Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva also took part in the symposium “Regional Action on Climate Change” (RACC17).
