The “Philosophical Foundations, Cultural Dimensions and Societal Values of Ecological Civilization and Sustainable Development” international conference under the auspices of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IPS-BAS) is taking place from 7 to 10 October in Sofia. The opening ceremony took place on 7 October at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of the Academy.

During the opening ceremony, welcoming remarks were made by H.E. Ms Dai Qingli, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Bulgaria, the Scientific Secretary of BAS for the “Man and Society” division, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mariana Tian and the Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of BAS, Prof. Emilia Chengelova.

Over 40 scholars, including more than 20 guests from leading Chinese academic institutions, are presenting papers at the conference – a strong testament to the established international role of BAS as a platform for dialogue between Europe and Asia on key sustainable development issues. The programme, prepared by IPS-BAS, brings together plenary lectures and thematic panels that draw on the philosophical and cultural roots of ecological civilisation and link them to societal values, norms and collective behaviour. The event demonstrates the capacity of BAS to integrate humanities and social sciences with green transition policies and societal sustainability – in partnership with the international scientific community.

In her address on behalf of the Academy’s leadership, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mariana Tian emphasized the strategic commitment of BAS to interdisciplinary research and international partnerships. “BAS reaffirms its mission to create knowledge and guide public debate towards science-based solutions. This conference is an example of how these partnerships can accelerate the path to sustainable development,” she stressed.
