BAS is celebrating 156 years
The Grand Prize of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for 2025 was awarded at a solemn assembly on the occasion of the 156th anniversary of the founding of BAS held on 13 October in the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall.
The winner of the Grand Prize in the field of life sciences is Corr. Memb. Tsvetalina Tankova. The Chairman of the Award Committee, Acad. Draga Toncheva, announced the winner, and the President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, presented the award. The author of the statuette is Assoc. Prof. Emil Bachiyski from the National Academy of Art. The nominees were presented with videos prepared by Assoc. Prof. Ina Aneva, Scientific Secretary of the “Biodiversity, Bioresources and Ecology” division.
Corr. Memb. Tsvetalina Tankova is a leading researcher in the field of diabetology, endocrinology and metabolomics. Her priorities are the study of pathogenesis, prediabetes, identification of new diagnostic and prognostic markers for screening of this severe disease and its management algorithms. The results of her work are important for the follow-up of pre-diabetes in its hidden and long term phase. Corr. Memb. Tankova is also one of the signatories of the Vienna Declaration on Prediabetes Screening and is one of the five experts who have developed the European and American Prediabetes and Diabetes Associations’ management algorithms.
Corr. Memb. Tankova announced that she was proud to receive the award of BAS – the most prestigious, the oldest and the most important scientific organization in Bulgaria which is a leader in science. “The award is also a recognition for medicine, and according to Hippocrates, medicine is the noblest art,” the BAS Grand Prize winner said.
The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, delivered a celebratory speech on the occasion of the 156th anniversary of BAS. “Since its founding until today, BAS has been home to remarkable scientists, statesmen, politicians, bankers, public figures, clergymen, some of the greatest and most talented writers and artists, academicians and corresponding members, who have contributed to the building of the foundations of the Bulgarian state in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” the President of BAS said. “Their skills, patriotic spirit and professional dedication have not remained buried under the layers of dust of today’s decades, the furious flow of malicious and commercial information,” she stressed in her speech and noted that they remained in the memory of today’s scientists who regularly, jealously and responsibly kept the memory of our past, of our Academy, founded exactly 156 years ago.
In her greeting, the President of BAS pointed out: “It is up to us to ensure that one of the symbols of knowledge and our identity endures, prospers and fulfils the legacies of our great predecessors.”
The solemn assembly was dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the founding of the Periodical Journal which was also the first scientific publication of modern Bulgaria. It continues to exist as the Journal of BAS to this day and is edited by distinguished members of the Academy. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elka Traykova from the Institute for Literature of BAS gave an academic speech “The Cultural and Historical Mission of the Periodical Journal of the Bulgarian Learned Society” while an exhibition “155 Years of the Periodical Journal of the Bulgarian Learned Society” has been arranged in the foyer of BAS by the Central Library of the Academy.
The host of the festive assembly was the Vice-President of BAS Corr. Memb Evdokia Pasheva. On the occasion of the celebration, a congratulatory address from the President of the National Assembly, Assoc. Prof. Nataliya Kiselova, was read. Deputy Minister of Education and Science Acad. Nikolay Vitanov congratulated the academic community on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Science. Congratulatory addresses were also received from the Mayor of Sofia Vassil Terziev, the Chairman of the Committee on Labour and Social Policy of the National Assembly Denitsa Sacheva, the President of the Council of Rectors Prof. Miglena Temelkova, the Rector of the National Music Academy Prof. Sava Dimitrov, the Rector of UNWE Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Rector of TU-Sofia Prof. Georgi Venkov, the Rector of Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy Flotilla Admiral Prof. Kalin Kalinov, the Head of the Military Academy Major General Staiko Prokopiev, the Chairman of BIA Dobri Mitrev, the Director General of BTA Kiril Valchev, the Director of the National Museum of Military History Assoc. Prof. Sonya Penkova, the Mayor of Slatina district Georgi Iliev. Official guests of the celebration were President Georgi Parvanov (2002-2012), the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Science Prof. Andrey Chorbanov, Assoc. Prof. Plamen Slavov – advisor on culture to President Rumen Radev, rectors of universities, scientists and public figures. Musical greetings to the participants in the celebration were presented by artists from the Sofia Opera and Ballet.
