On 16 October, Prof. DSc Vassil Kirov, Chairman of the General Assembly of BAS, was welcomed as a new member of Academia Europaea by its President, Prof. Donald Bruce Dingwell, at the Building Bridges 2025: 36th Annual Conference of Academia Europaea (AE) and 14th Conference of the Young Academy of Europe (YAE) in Barcelona. This is a significant achievement for the scientific community in Bulgaria and Central and Eastern Europe, which needs a stronger voice in European science policy.
Academia Europaea was established in 1988 and is the pan-European academy for the humanities, letters and sciences. The aim of Academia Europaea is the advancement and dissemination of excellence in science in the humanities, law, economic, social and political sciences, mathematics, medicine and all branches of the natural and technological sciences throughout the world for the public good and the education of the public of all ages in the said subjects in Europe.
Members of the Academy are 89 Nobel laureates, including Prof. Philippe Aghion who is one of the three Nobel Laureates in Economics for 2025. The Bulgarian members of the Academy are 11, among them are Acad. Draga Toncheva, Acad. Vassya Bankova and Acad. Konstantin Hadjiivanov – all three from BAS.
