The highest professional award of the Bulgarian Medical Union was received by Corr. Memb. Prof. Nikolay Gabrovsky during an official ceremony at the National History Museum (NHM) on 20 October 2025. The award was presented to him by Vice President Iliana Iotova. “Anyone who has chosen this path is not waiting for titles or awards because for him success is measured by the lives saved, for which there are no units of measure,” she said.
In 2021, Prof. Gabrovsky became the youngest corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in the field of “Medical Sciences”. Currently, he is Head of the Neurosurgery Clinic and Deputy Director for medical activities of “N. I. Pirogov” University Hospital. He has introduced innovative techniques in the field of mini-invasive spinal surgery in Bulgaria.
At the beginning of October, Prof. Nikolay Gabrovsky, MD, was elected as a member of the Executive Committee and Treasurer of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), the largest professional community of neurosurgeons in Europe.
At the ceremony in NHM, an award in the “Contribution to the development and application of innovative medicine and unique techniques” category was also presented to Prof. Dr. Slavcho Tomov, a leading specialist with two majors – obstetrics and gynaecology, and oncology, a world-renowned surgeon and a pioneer in robotic and minimally invasive surgery.
