The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, met today at the Academy with Prof. Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council. The meeting was attended by Corr. Memb. Evdokia Pasheva, Vice-President of BAS, Prof. Zara Cherkezova-Zheleva, National Contact Point for ERC in Bulgaria, and Ms. Sabine Simmross.
The President of BAS acquainted Prof. Leptin with the activities of the Centers of Competence and Excellence and emphasized that the modern infrastructure at the Academy supported the research of scientists.
Prof. Leptin shared good practices from other Eastern European countries that could lead to increased participation of BAS units in ERC competitions.
The European Research Council (ERC) was established by the European Commission in 2007 to fund cutting-edge scientific research in Europe. It is currently part of Pillar 1, “Excellent Science,” of the Horizon Europe Framework Program.
Prof. Leptin has been chair of ERC since November 2021. She used to be director of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in Heidelberg and head of a research group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
