An international conference marking the 75th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights was held at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The forum was organized by the Institute for State and Law of BAS. Prominent scholars, lawyers, lecturers, and doctoral students from the United Kingdom, Spain, and Bulgaria presented scientific reports in five thematic panels and discussed the significance of the European Convention 75 years after its signing.

“The conference is dedicated to this important anniversary which is an exceptional event for the whole world,” the director of the institute, Prof. Irena Ilieva, said who opened the forum.  “The European Convention on Human Rights is unique because it is the first legally binding international treaty for the protection of human rights and an emanation of the understanding of democracy and the rule of law,” she said.

Over 30 scientific reports were presented during the hybrid event at BAS. Among the participants were Prof. Diana Kovacheva, judge to the European Court of Human Rights, Michael Whine, member of the British Commission and the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance of the Council of Europe, Prof. Yolanda Gamarra from the University of Zaragoza in Spain, former member of the Management Board of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights. Ambassador Maria Spassova, who is the current Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the Council of Europe, delivered a welcome address.
