A bilingual scientific catalog presenting works of art from the collections of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has been published. Art, as a natural companion to science since the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, has retained a special place in its structures and institutions. On the occasion of its 155th anniversary, the leadership of our oldest scientific institution commissioned a team from the Institute for Art Studies to carry out a research project related to the selection and cataloguing of part of the art collections.
The BAS preserves in its collections both priceless works of high artistic value and symbolic images and testimonies to its history and cultural heritage. This anniversary album edition also contributes to the dissemination of knowledge about the arts by identifying and attributing works of art, introducing readers to the biographies of the authors, and pointing out specific facts related to both the creation and the fate of the works, conveying emotional depth to their scientific presentation. The high level of content of the proposed texts, achieved by the team of authors, and the visual presence become an important part of our communication with art preparing the next stages of interaction with it on the path of developing a visual culture with contemporary dimensions.
The project leader is Acad. Vassil Nikolov, and the coordinator is Prof. Dr. Joanna Spassova-Dikova.
The publication includes works from the collections and archives of: BAS Administration; Institute of Art Studies, BAS; Economic Research Institute, BAS; Scientific Archive, BAS, National Archaeological Institute with Museum, BAS; National Museum of Natural History, BAS; Regional Academic Center – Ruse, BAS; Central Library, BAS;
