The European Commission has awarded the prehistoric salt-producing and urban center of Provadia-Solnitsata with the European Heritage Label, a recognition given to sites of exceptional importance to European cultural identity and the safeguarding of common European cultural heritage.

Receiving this label highlights the importance of the Provadia-Solnitsata archaeological complex not only at the national level, but also at the European level. It provides an opportunity for the site to join European networks and projects, exchange good practices, and present its cultural wealth to an international audience. The label motivates even more active preservation, research, and promotion of Solnitsata and confirms its place as a cultural bridge between the past and the present, inspiring and educating generations.

The European Heritage Label is an initiative of the European Union, established by Decision 1194 of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe in 2011. Its aim is to promote sites of European cultural heritage that have become symbols of European integration, values, ideals, and history. To date, 67 European sites have been awarded the label, including only one in Bulgaria!

The European Heritage Label brings together monuments from the distant and recent past that have a strong symbolic European value and a significant role in the history and culture of the old continent. These sites offer visitors the opportunity to experience Europe’s rich cultural heritage and expand their knowledge of European history.

Provadia-Solnitsata is the newest addition to the list of sites awarded the European Heritage Label which is a recognition of Bulgaria’s exceptional prehistoric heritage and the role of this region in the creation of the first European civilization.
