A press conference on “The SUDEM strategic European project, focusing on the digitization of forecasting, preventing serious consequences, and managing processes in disasters and accidents, has come to a successful conclusion” was held today at the press club of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
Within the framework of the project, through the application of modern foresight tools, a strategic analytical report was prepared, interdisciplinary educational content was developed, and specific recommendations were formulated for the application and further development of the results in Europe and beyond with significant interest from relevant stakeholders. Researchers from Bulgaria, Germany, Ukraine, the Netherlands, and Turkey are participating in the project. It is coordinated by Prof. Arch. Georgi P. Georgiev, PhD, and the institutional manager is Prof. Dimo Zafirov, DSc, from the Space Research and Technology Institute of BAS (SRTI-BAS).
The Vice-President of BAS Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov congratulated the project team on behalf of the Academy’s Board. “It is precisely such projects that make sense because science saves lives,” said Prof. Moutafov, emphasizing the relevance of the topic internationally and congratulating the Space Research and Technology Institute of BAS for their research work in the organized team.

The SUDEM international project – Sustainable Digitalisation of Disaster and Emergency Management Processes – is implemented under KA220 HED sub-programme for strategic partnerships in higher education of the Erasmus+ programme and will be successfully completed at the end of April 2026, with all activities performed and results exceeding the initial targets.
The press conference took place during the final meeting of the international project team, with the participation of representatives of all partner organizations. The press conference was attended by Prof. Arch. Georgi P. Georgiev, PhD, coordinator of the international interdisciplinary strategic project and consortium, Prof. Dimo Zafirov, DSc, institutional project manager, Prof. Georgi Zhelev, PhD, director of the coordinating institute SRTI at BAS, Prof. Axel Sikora, PhD, Eng., head of the project team at the University of Offenburg, Germany, Prof. Mehmet Aksit, PhD – head of the project team at CIT, Netherlands, and Seher Turan – head of the associated partner AFAD (Turkish National Disaster and Emergency Management Agency), Prof. Dr. Anatoliy Sachenko – head of the project team at the West Ukrainian National University, and Prof. Oleg Zachko, PhD – head of the project team at the Lviv State University of Life Safety.
