Assoc. Prof. Nadya Filipova, Ph.D., is the newly elected director of the Institute for Historical Studies. Assoc. Prof. Nadia Filipova’s research focuses on Bulgarian foreign policy, the Arab world, international relations, and minority issues. She teaches in the bachelor’s and master’s programs of the Department of Arabic and Semitic Studies at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and participates in the training of young scholars, doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers at the Institute of Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The primary objective of the Management and Development Program of the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for the period 2026–2029 is to consolidate the leading position of this unit of BAS in the following areas:

  • Conducting high-quality fundamental and applied research and activities related to Bulgarian, European, and world history that meet international scientific standards and follow current interdisciplinary approaches;
  • Supporting the implementation of policies by state, municipal, and public institutions and organizations;
  • Enhancing Bulgaria’s international, including scientific, prestige;
  • Maintaining and fostering Bulgarian scientific potential.

The program calls for the implementation of several key tasks:

  • Increasing the number of publications in journals indexed in global databases;
  • Improving the ranking of and facilitating access to the publications of the Institute for Historical Studies;
  • Expanding project-based activities, including international ones;
  • Diversifying joint activities with national, regional, and municipal institutions and organizations, as well as with Bulgarian communities abroad;
  • Developing teaching and applied research activities.
