Cooperation in the field of archaeology between Bulgarian and Italian scholars was discussed at a meeting today at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences by the President of BAS, Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva, the Italian Ambassador, H.E. Marcello Apicella, and Prof. Massimo Osanna from the “Federico II” University of Naples. Prof. Osanna is visiting Sofia at the invitation of the Director of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at BAS, Assoc. Prof. Hristo Popov, PhD. During the conversation, the possibility of expanding cooperation in the exchange of doctoral students was also discussed.
Also participating in the meeting were the Vice-President of BAS Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov, and the Director of NAIM, Assoc. Prof. Hristo Popov. Prof. Moutafov highlighted Prof. Massimo Osanna’s experience as the head of all museums in Italy and the need to develop joint initiatives between museums in both countries. Assoc. Prof. Hristo Popov cited as an example that cooperation could also be applied to the archaeological research of the Thracian tomb of Aleksandrovo.
The year 2027 marks the 60th anniversary of the collaboration between BAS and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). To mark this occasion, Corr. Memb. Slavcheva proposed organizing a joint event to celebrate the anniversary.
Last night at NAIM, Prof. Massimo Osanna delivered a lecture titled “Reimagining Pompeii: Archaeology, Conservation, and Cultural Heritage in the 21st Century.” More information
Prof. Massimo Osanna is one of the leading experts who has worked on the study and preservation of the ancient city of Pompeii in recent decades. He is currently the Director General of Museums at the Italian Ministry of Culture.
