BAS condemns the Russian drone strike on the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv and joins the appeal issued by ALLEA (https://allea.org/allea-condemns-russian-drone-strike-on-the-national-academy-of-sciences-of-ukraine/). Attacks targeting Ukraine’s scientific and cultural infrastructure constitute not only an assault on the country’s people but also a deliberate attempt to destroy the conditions under which free research, knowledge and democratic life are possible. Science, scientific research and education are not legitimate targets – neither in times of war nor in any other context. The destruction of scientific institutions means the destruction of a society’s ability to understand, adapt and recover.
