The National Archaeological Institute with Museum at BAS (NAIM-BAS) today presented the results of the archaeological investigations, restoration and public engagement initiatives concerning the historical remains on Trapezitsa Hill in Veliko Tarnovo. The event, organised jointly by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Veliko Tarnovo Municipality, was attended by the President of BAS, Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva; the Vice-President Corresponding Member Evdokia Pasheva, and the Scientific Secretary of the “Cultural and Historical Heritage and National Identity” Division, Assoc. Prof. Mario Ivanov.
The Director of NAIM, Assoc. Prof. Hristo Popov, presented the achievements of archaeologists over the past twenty years. He explained that archaeological investigations at Trapezitsa had begun immediately after the Liberation of Bulgaria, initially carried out by local historians, teachers and educated individuals. Subsequently, the National Museum – now the National Archaeological Museum – also became involved in the study of Trapezitsa and Tsarevets.
The findings from 20 years of archaeological research at Trapezitsa have been compiled in a collection which was presented today at the event.
The Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo, Daniel Panov, presented certificates of honour to the participants in the archaeological research.
