The National Assembly adopted the annual report on the activities of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for 2025. The President of BAS, Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva, presented the document highlighting the Academy’s active and multifaceted work.
The greatest assets of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are its highly qualified scientists and scientific expertise, Corr. Memb. Slavcheva told MPs. The high standard of scientific output has been maintained, with a total of 4,185 articles by scientists published in 2025 in prestigious international journals with a high impact factor.
She added that the long-standing problem of attracting young people and retaining them within the Academy’s structures is gradually being overcome. A total of 2,544 researchers work at BAS, the majority of whom are senior research assistants and associate professors, and the average age of the research staff is 49, the President announced. Over the past year, 418 PhD students were supervised at the Academy, and 224 Bachelors’ and Masters’ theses were completed.
As an example of the link between science, education and business, Corr. Memb. Slavcheva cited the work on 39 research projects with a high level of technological readiness within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Plan alone. Over the past year, the scientific units of BAS filed 26 new patent applications and were granted 35.
