The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is celebrating today, 12 October, the 150th anniversary of its founding. Presidents of academies and international scientific organizations from all over the world welcomed the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. The international meeting is part of the jubilee celebrations of the largest scientific institution in Bulgaria.

Many of the institutes of BAS have been set up to support the development of our country, said the President of BAS, Prof. Julian Revalski, DSc. The Academy’s scientists have made the first steps to contribute to the development of industry in sectors such as electronics, nuclear energetics, chemical industry, biotechnologies, information and communication technologies. He added that the Academy is proud to be among those who have contributed to the development of modern Bulgaria.

BAS is one of the founding academies of the Federation of All European Academies (ALLEA), 25 years ago, and is involved in many of our activities, said Prof. Graham Caie, Vice President of ALLEA. He congratulated the scientists for these 150 years of successful academic research and 150 years of dedication to the world of science.

Today, the presence of so many guests from all parts of Europe and the world, from different fields of science, is a symbol of the community and solidarity of which the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a part, said the President of the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EASAC), Prof. Thierry Courvoisier. He indicated that being active in the world of science also means being responsible and sharing the knowledge you have gained.

The President of the International Science Council (ISC), Prof. Daya Reddy, defined the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as the first intellectual center in Bulgaria to carry out high-level research, scientific education and continue to be a desirable global partner.

The program envisages the possibility for international scientists to discuss topics in their fields of work with their Bulgarian counterparts. The celebration will continue with a solemn concert-performance “150 Years of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences” at the National Palace of Culture.
