World Day for Glaciers is celebrated for the first time

An event on the occasion of the World Day for Glaciers (21 March), World Water Day (22 March) and World Meteorological Day (23 March) with the participation of scientists, students and teachers was held at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences today. This forum was organised by the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (CAWRI-BAS). "Today for the first time is celebrated the World Day for Glaciers (21 March), declared by UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization," the Director of CAWRI Corr. Memb. Ekaterina Batchvarova said. She opened the event and noted that the themes of the forum's programme were related to the protection of glaciers and the huge importance they had for the climate. The Scientific Secretary of the [...]

ProSkills2Work – progressing promising skills to work in Bulgaria

The launch of the ProSkills2Work - Progressing Promising Skills to Work in Bulgaria project was announced on 19 March. This large-scale initiative for BAS with a budget of almost 2.5 million euros and a 5-year timeframe is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme. The project builds the research capacity of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology (IPS), increases its international scientific visibility and its potential to attract project funding. ProSkills2Work is expected to bring Bulgarian research in the field of sociology of education and labour to a world level, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Christian Imdorf from the University of Hannover who has joined the IPS team for five years. The official opening took place at the National Archaeological Institute [...]

Scientists at IOMT – BAS develop key materials for future ultrathin spintronics

Schema of the graphene - PdSe2 device to study the proximity effect induced by PdSe2 (F1-F4 ferromagnetic contacts, 2 metal contacts (in grey))   Researchers from the "Acad. Jordan Malinowski” Institute of Optical Materials and Technologies (IOMT-BAS) in collaboration with ICN2 and ICMAB-CSIC (Spain) have demonstrated how the interaction between two two-dimensional (2D) materials (graphene and palladium diselenide (PdSe2)) forming a van der Waals heterostructure can improve the spintronic functionality of graphene. Graphene and PdSe₂ are considered among the key materials for future ultrathin spintronics due to their outstanding electrical properties. PdSe₂ has been demonstrated to induce significant changes in the transport and dynamics of spin currents in graphene, providing new opportunities to control them. PdSe₂ is found to induce spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in graphene [...]
