Bulgaria hosts the 16th General Assembly of ELI ERIC

The 16th meeting of the General Assembly of the "Extreme Light" European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ELI ERIC) was opened by the President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva. The accession of our country as a full member of ELI ERIC is a significant step, Corr. Memb. Slavcheva said and stressed that this reflected the ambition to be an active participant in building the scientific potential of Europe in the field of laser technologies. The meeting was also attended by Acad. Nikola Sabotinov (Chairman of BAS 2008-2012) who had invented the world's first copper bromide vapour laser. “Large Scale Scientific Computations” international scientific conference

 The fifteenth international conference on Large-Scale Scientific Computations LSSC'25 was held in the period 16-20 June in Sozopol. The Forum was organized by the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies - BAS (IICT) in cooperation with the Centre of Excellence for Informatics and ICT (http://ict.acad.bg/). The conference was opened by Corr. Memb. Svetozar Margenov, Chairman of LSSC'25 and Director of IICT-BAS. More than 150 participants from over 20 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia attended the event. In memory of Prof. Raytcho Lazarov, a special session on "Numerical methods: analysis and computer implementations was held. Distinction for Prof. V. Murdarov in Vienna

On June 18, 2025, a Golden Doctoral Diploma was awarded to Prof. DSc. Vladko Murdarov on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his receiving the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The solemn speech at the ceremony was delivered by the head of the Institute of Slavonic Studies, Prof. Dr. Stefan Newerkla, who stressed that the jubilarian Prof. Murdarov, a recipient of the Gottfried von Herder Fellowship, was the author of 27 books and more than 1150 scientific articles in renowned international journals. The President of BAS participates in a forum on innovation and research

  The President of BAS Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva has taken part in the expert panel "Transforming Higher Education through Innovation and Research" at the Green Transition Forum 5.0, which is taking place in Sofia from 16 to 20 June. "No matter how inspiring innovations are, they need fundamental scientific knowledge and research to happen," Corr. Memb. Slavcheva said. She recalled that "scientists from BAS and universities work together in centres of excellence and competence. The Assembly of Academicians elects a new Foreign Member of BAS

  At its meeting on 19 June, the Assembly of Academicians of BAS elected Prof. Alessandro Maria Bruni from Italy Foreign Member of the Academy. Professor Alessandro Maria Bruni was born on 9 September 1978 in Rome. He works in the fields of Byzantine and Slavic palaeography, codicology, textual studies, historical linguistics and hymnography as well as in the field of Kartvelology. He has specialised with some of the most eminent medievalists, such as Prof. Enrica Follieri in Rome and Prof. Boris Fonkich in Moscow. Until 2024, he was a professor at the University of Ca Foscari in Venice, and then at the Oriental University of Naples, today the largest Italian centre for the study and research of foreign languages and cultures. Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov opens a conference at Sofia University

The Vice-President of BAS Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov has opened today the Fifth Annual Scientific Conference of the Centre of Excellence "Heritage BG" in his capacity as R&D Coordinator of the eponymous project for the construction and development of the CoE. The conference is held in the Egg Hall of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski" on 17 and 18 June. "Heritage BG" is the only such center that has an annual scientific conference and its own periodical publication," Prof. Moutafov said at the opening.
