120 years since the birth of John Atanasoff

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences celebrated the 120th anniversary of the birth of John Atanasoff, who created the first digital electronic computer, with a scientific session held at the “Prof. Marin Drinov" Hall of the Academy. The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, opened the event by stressing that John Atanasoff's invention was undoubtedly the greatest in technological terms of the 20th century. Meeting of Prof. Revalski with H.E. Olesya Ilashchuk

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will participate in the organization of events on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Ukraine. This was agreed at a meeting at the Academy by the President Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Bulgaria H.E. Olesya Ilashchuk. At the meeting, the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Prof. Julian Revalski presented the long-standing cooperation between scientists from both countries. During her visit, H.E. Establishment of a National DNA Barcoding Consortium

  On 27.09.2023 at the “Prof. Marin Drinov" Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was held the National Symposium "Establishment of a Bulgarian Consortium on DNA Barcoding - Bulgarian Barcode of Life".  The event was organized by an Initiative Committee including seven institutions: Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics - BAS, Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research - BAS, National Museum of Natural History - BAS, Faculty of Biology of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", University of Forestry, Agricultural Academy and the “Pensoft” science publishing house. The lectures “Slavic World” by Prof. Shishmanov presented in Freiburg

Prof. Revalski, Full Member of BAS, guest at the event On the eve of the Independence Day of Bulgaria, a symposium dedicated to the distinguished Bulgarian scientist, politician and public figure Professor Ivan Shishmanov (1862-1928) was held at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, Germany. The occasion was the publication of Professor Ivan Shishmanov's lectures "Slavic World", read 100 years ago in the auditoriums of the famous German university and preserved today in the Scientific Archives of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. European Heritage Days – Sofia 2023

For the ninth consecutive year, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences took part in the European Heritage Days initiative, which was held under the motto "Europe, a common heritage". The doors of the Academy's central building were open for visits on 17 September 2023, coinciding with the Sofia Day holiday. Dozens of visitors from the country and abroad crossed the threshold of the building of BAS and got acquainted with the history of the oldest scientific institution in Bulgaria and one of the emblematic symbols of the capital; they were given the opportunity to see the meeting rooms, the office of the President, whose interior aroused the greatest interest and curiosity, as well as the permanent expositions. Botanical Garden – BAS: “Beauty under the shade of the maple”

On 16.09.2023 in the Botanical Garden of BAS was held the event "Beauty under the shade of the maple" where visitors had the opportunity to experience the beauty of plants and the mysteries of Japanese traditions. Special guests were Mr. Takayuki Shinozawa, Counssilor at the Embassy of Japan and Mr. Kento Muraki, Cultural Attaché of Japan in Bulgaria. Prof. Dr. Svetlana Nikolova, Director of the Botanical Garden welcomed the guests and presented the programme of the event, which was filled with Japanese traditions (tea ceremony, demonstration of Katori Shinto ryu, Haiku, Ikebana, calligraphy and origami) and Bulgarian folk songs.
